The project brief was to design a spatially efficient home with a flexible layout that could accommodate visitors without sacrificing living space when the owners are home alone. The existing double-height space and open loft are filled in to gain the necessary square footage. Douglas fir floor joists are left exposed to provide warmth and extra height in the living space.

A large-format sliding door on the upper floor functions as a operable wall that can divide a generous primary bedroom into two rooms without restricting access to either one. The second room created by the sliding wall can be used as a guest room, home office or something else that might require some privacy. In this configuration, access to the primary bedroom is through the ensuite, eliminating the need for unnecessary and space-wasting corridors. A band of clerestory windows brings natural light into the interior spaces.
